After we completed the guest bathroom renovation and had a working second bathroom to use, read more about that project here, it was time to move onto the much anticipated primary bathroom! Not only was this the last major space in our condo to renovate, we were excited because the primary bathroom really needed some updating – can you believe the bathroom had carpet?!
To us, this bathroom did not feel like the primary bathroom. It was lacking that clean and luxurious feel. The vanity was very undersized and the existing carpet needed to go. Again, we were looking forward to utilizing an IKEA godmorgon vanity and upgrade with Semihandmade fronts. In here, we decided to go with the walnut and opt for side panels so that the vanity had that elevated look.
We love how fresh the finished bathroom feels. I also love how cohesive the design is with the rest of the house. We live in an early 1900’s building so we wanted to have some vintage nods, like the hex tile, while keeping with a modern and clean look. However, knowing what we know now, I would have selected a larger format tile for the floor for ease of installation.
From demo to completion the bathroom took a total of 8 weeks. We DIYed the whole project aside from bringing in a company to professionally refinish the tub and tile surround. The biggest surprise was how frustrating and time-consuming all of the weird angles of the layout made completing everything, like tiling the floor and installing new baseboards.
The whole project cost around $4,200. It seems like it took us forever to get this bathroom done, but we did it. The awkward layout made everything much more difficult and it took twice as long to complete as our other bathroom, but there is nothing better than the accomplishment you feel in designing and doing the work yourself.
